The Reborn Lawn

Adam here. I finally got fed up with how cruddy the front and side lawns around our house looked, and since a nice lawn will make a house rent out more quickly, I wanted to rectify the issue. I didn't realize just how much work this was going to be.

So my youngest brother Kacy came over two weeks ago and I rented a sod cutter. We used it to cut all of the old junk (mostly weeds, moss, and a lot of dead grass), and then we proceeded to roll it up and throw it into the back of a borrowed pickup. I would say that this was a ton of work, but that would be an understatement. According to the scales at the yard waste place, It ended up being three and a half tons of work. And we only got 3/4ths of the yard done. So the following Monday, I took the day off from work, had my other younger brother Brek come over, and we finished the removal of the old stuff. Then Kacy came over again, and we rented a rototiller. We used the rototiller to till in some horse manure compost, and then got some TAGRO mix fertilizer to put on top.

So it was another huge amount of work, shoveling and spreading all of the horse manure compost and TAGRO mix, but we got it all done by the end of that Monday. I wish I had taken a picture, but I didn't. So you will have to imagine our front yard with nothing but dark brown dirt everywhere. Oh, and for added effect, imagine it smelling like a combination between an old horse manure pile and a sewage treatment plant. Mmmmmm. Yummy. Smells like fertility.

The next step was to find a hydroseeder, which I did for a really decent price. He came on the following Friday and sprayed everything with hydroseed mixture. This helped a little bit to cut down on the smell (since it was all covered in the hydroseed mixture), and it made the lawn look kind of green again, even if that was just the dye in the hydroseed. It was better than the literally poo-brown yard. Here's what it looked like post-hydroseed:

Our main task at this point was to keep the hydroseed moist. And since the weather decided to take this opportunity to become exceedingly hot and dry, that meant watering it three times a day for the next seven to ten days.

This effort was not in vain, however. On day 7, this past Friday, I started to see some growth. So I took these pictures, to show what all of that time, effort, and money had produced:

In this one, you can just barely start to see the first green blades of new grass coming up in the front lawn.

In this one, you can see the same on the front/side yard. It's particularly advanced underneath the left side of the tree in this picture.

But, since it is pretty difficult to see the actual growth in those wide-angle pictures, I took a couple of closer-up views to show the actual growth:

So yeah. Good times. I will do another update in a day or two. There is a marked difference in the visible growth between these pictures on Friday, and what the lawn looks like today, just two days later. You will be able to see a much more impressive result in the pictures I will take tomorrow or Tuesday.

Road Rash

Joshua tripped and fell yesterday on my aunt's concrete patio.

I had wanted to get his two-year-old pictures taken on Thursday, but I wasn't feeling well, so we didn't go. Then on Thursday afternoon, he tripped into the rear bumper of the Jeep and got a slight black eye. And now he has this huge scrape on his face. It looks like pictures will have to wait for a while...

Adam has spent the past few days trying to teach Josh how to say "scar face."

The Last Present

At Joshua's birthday party on Saturday with our families, we gave him a present that he opened last:

(and yes, I realize the "D" is backwards...I was in a rush...)

We just found out this past week that I am pregnant! We are very excited to welcome another little one into our family!!

Two Years Old!

Joshua turned two years old yesterday! He has had a fun month. He caught another cold after being around all the family during my grandpa's funeral, but it wasn't too bad. He seems to have been sick at least once a month this winter. Hopefully he's done being sick for a while. Let's see, what else has happened this month...

Joshua found out that kitties make good pillows...

Joshua has so much to say lately. He babbles and babbles all day long. There are a couple actual words in there, too. He can copy what we say pretty well, if he's in the mood. In fact, he likes to copy lots of things. When his little friends are over, he likes to do everything that they do, whether it be laying on the floor, leaning against the wall, running in circles, etc. He still loves Blues Clues and has started copying the dances that Steve does on the show. It made me laugh out loud the first time I saw him do it. It is hilarious to watch him. Joshua also LOVES to draw on his little magna-doodle pad. He has always liked to mess around with it, but these past few weeks, it has really captured his attention. He can sit and occupy himself for what seems like hours. It's a travel-size pad, so we take it everywhere we go. When it's time to get in the car, he grabs it and heads for the door. He is also getting some more teeth. His two-year molars are coming in on the bottom.

We had a family birthday party for Joshua on Saturday. Adam's family and my family converged on my parents' house and had dinner. Then we helped Joshua open his presents and had cake and ice cream.

Hot Wheels from Uncle Brek

Elmo books, interactive sound book, and clothes from Grandma and Grandpa Hansen

Curious George book, book of colors, and a puzzle from Grandma and Grandpa Pratt

Blues Clues doll and big doodle pad from Uncle Kevin and family.

Adam found a fantastic deal on craigslist for this Radio Flyer tricycle. Joshua loved it and immediately climbed on. His legs don't quite reach the pedals yet, though. He loves to climb on it and be pushed around and around.

This is the birthday cake I made.

We searched three or four different stores before we found one that had number "2" candles in stock. Then the next day I was looking in the cupboard for something and found a baggie of candles, including a number "2" candle we had saved from one of Adam's brother's birthday cakes last summer. And then we forgot to bring either one of the candles to the party. **sigh**

Thank you everyone for the gifts! Joshua LOVES playing with his new toys. He dove for the big doodle pad the next morning and loves playing with his new cars. He lines them up and moves them around.

We love having Joshua in our family and are grateful for his smiles, giggles and big hugs!

Happy Mother's Day!

I've had a great Mother's Day today. Adam's parents were in town and we had a family breakfast with Adam's parents and brothers this morning before church. Then after church we went to my parents' house and had dinner with my parents and my brother and his family. We've had a weekend full of family and celebrations, actually. Even though today is Joshua' birthday, we had a family party yesterday, which was a lot of fun. Pictures to come shortly.

I love being a mom, and I am so grateful we have Joshua in our little family!

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Holy crap...

...we're really doing this.

Tonight we booked a flight for me to go down to San Antonio with Adam when his boss sends him down to find housing. We're going July 6-10. We also booked our (one-way!) flights for our big move. It's August 4th. YIKES! It's really happening.

Side note: Alaska Airlines has a new direct flight from Seattle to Austin starting August 3rd. They have some screamin' deals right now for the first couple months of the route. We got tickets for all three of us for less than my round-trip ticket in July. So if anyone wants to visit us (hint, hint) book now on Alaska for August or September :)
